Things to do in Tenterden

28 June 2026

Tenterden is one of the prettiest market towns in the Weald of Kent: a broad, gently curving High Street lined with mature trees, white weather-boarded and tile-hung buildings, and a good mix of independent shops, cafés and places to eat.

Ride the steam railway

The Kent & East Sussex Railway runs heritage steam trains from Tenterden Town station out through the Rother Valley. It's a lovely, gentle day out for families and railway fans alike.

England's wine country

Tenterden sits at the heart of Kent's vineyard country. Just outside town at Small Hythe you'll find one of the area's best-known wine estates, and there are more vineyards to visit nearby in Biddenden. Many offer tours and tastings through the warmer months.

Smallhythe Place

A short drive from the centre, Smallhythe Place is the former home of the Victorian actress Ellen Terry — a half-timbered house with cottage gardens, now cared for by the National Trust.

Shop and eat on the High Street

Tenterden is known for its independent retailers. Browse the shops, stop for coffee and cake in one of the cafés, or book a table at one of the local restaurants and pubs.

Explore the villages

Some of the best days out are in the surrounding villages — the vineyards and cider of Biddenden, the gardens at Rolvenden, the canal-side calm of Appledore and the woods around Hamstreet.
